You Have Many Options Getting to Puerto Jimenez!

The Plane

The fastest and most popular way getting to Puerto Jimenez is to fly. This is also the most expensive option, but time is money…right? Thankfully, there are many major airlines that arrive through Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO), the main airport serving San José, on a daily basis. Once you have arrived in San José, the capital of Costa Rica, you will need to take another (short) flight on a domestic airline. Choose either Nature Air or Sansa Regional airlines, or Alfa Romeo Air, the premier charter airline to reach Puerto Jimenez.

To avoid an overnight stay in San José plan to arrive before 12:00 noon and depart on a local flight the same day. If you do prefer to spend some time in San José we will be happy to suggest hotel reservations. Please give us your flight and arrival information when you make your reservation with us.

A Rental Car

Have some extra time? Rent a car! From San José, the shortest route getting to Puerto Jimenez via a rental car is Highway 2, the Panamerican Highway. Directions:

  • Take Hwy 2 to San Isidro
  • Turn right to get on the Dominical Highway
  • At the end of Dominical Hwy, turn left onto the Costanera Highway
  • Drive through Dominical and Uvita
  • Take the exit for the Panamerican Highway at Palmar Norte
  • At Chacarita (best place to gas up as needed), you will see signs for Puerto Jimenez

Riding the Bus

If you are not in a rush getting to Puerto Jimenez and have A LOT of time, and you’re interested in making some Tico friends? Ride the bus! Buses leave daily from San José and pass through San Isidro de El General where passengers can also get on. Bus 699 leaves from San Jose at 6am and 12noon, taking about 10 hours to reach Puerto Jimenez. Bus 612 to Golfito can also be taken, which takes about 8 hours and leaves at 7am and 3pm.

Arriving by Boat

Are you getting to Puerto Jimenez via Golfito? There are water taxi’s and the ferry. The water taxi’s (speedboats) take about 30 minutes and cost around $6.00. The passenger ferry from Golfito to Puerto Jimenez takes about an hour and a half and runs twice daily. Schedule is random and subject to change. The cost is $2. There are also fast ferries available that can do the trip in about 30 minutes, the cost is $6. As of January 2014, the posted fast ferry schedule is as follows. From Puerto Jimenez to Golfito there are fast ferries at 6am (2 boats), 11:30am, and 2pm. There are return ferries at 10am, 11:30am, 1pm, and 3:15pm. …the boat leaves early if it is full so it is best to be at the dock early. Also, the bus stop for the dock isn’t exactly obvious. You don’t want to take the Golfito bus all the way to the last stop (though if you do it’s a short $0.50 ride on a local back to the dock). The location of the fast ferry dock in Golfito is approximately 200m SE along route 14 from the Escuela San Francisco. If you can’t find it, ask around, a local should be able to point you in the right direction. The ferries dock at the main pier in Puerto Jimenez NW of the airport.” —
